Designing a villa for the UAE climate: shade, orientation and glazing

How orientation, shading, glazing and outdoor space make a villa cooler, cheaper to run and more pleasant to live in under the UAE sun.

In short

In the UAE the sun is the strongest design force. Orienting the villa well, limiting and shading west- and east-facing glass, using deep reveals, overhangs and screens, and planning shaded outdoor spaces reduce heat gain and cooling demand before any equipment is chosen.

Key points

  • Orientation is free: place living spaces and large windows where the sun can be controlled, usually north and south.
  • Shade the glass outside the window; blinds inside stop glare but let the heat in.
  • East and west sun is low and hard to shade; keep openings there smaller or screened.
  • Courtyards, covered terraces and planting make outdoor space usable for more of the year.

In the UAE the sun is the most powerful force acting on a house. A villa that is designed with it in mind is cooler, cheaper to run and more pleasant to live in, and most of the benefit comes from decisions that cost nothing extra: where the building sits, where the windows go, and how they are shaded.

Start with orientation

The sun is high in the middle of the day and low in the morning and evening. High sun on north- and south-facing walls is relatively easy to shade with overhangs; low sun from the east and especially the west reaches deep into a room and is hard to stop. Living spaces and large windows are therefore best placed where the sun can be controlled, and service rooms, stairs and storage can act as a buffer on the hot sides.

Shade the glass from the outside

A blind or curtain stops glare, but by the time sunlight reaches it the heat is already inside. Shading works best outside the glass: deep window reveals, overhangs sized to the sun angles, vertical fins on east and west faces, and screens such as mashrabiya-inspired panels. These elements also give a facade depth and character.

Choose glazing deliberately

Large windows are a pleasure in the right place and a burden in the wrong one. The glass itself matters too: high-performance glazing reduces the heat that passes through while keeping daylight. The design decides how much glass goes where; the specification decides how it performs.

Make the outside usable

Courtyards, covered terraces, pergolas and planting turn a plot into rooms you can use outside the hottest months. A shaded courtyard also brings daylight and air into the middle of a deep plan.

Requirements are a starting point

Abu Dhabi’s Estidama programme sets sustainability requirements for new buildings. A good design meets them as a matter of course and goes further where it helps the people who will live in the house.

In practice

These questions are settled at concept stage, before any equipment is chosen. You can see our villa designs in Projects, and if you are planning one, tell us about it.

Questions

Does a shaded design make the house dark?

No. Good shading blocks direct sun while letting daylight in; well-shaded rooms are usually brighter to live in because they are free of glare.

Is insulation more important than shading?

Both matter. Shading reduces the heat that reaches the walls and glass; insulation and good glazing reduce what passes through them.
