What an interior designer delivers, stage by stage

From the first meeting to installation: the drawings, visualisations and specifications an interior design service produces, and what each one is for.

In short

Interior design moves from a brief to a concept with layouts and visualisations, then to detailed drawings and specifications the contractor builds from. The deliverables matter because they are what keeps the finished room close to the room you approved.

Key points

  • The brief defines how each room is used and the direction of style; the concept shows layout, light and materials.
  • Visualisations are for judging the design; detailed drawings and specifications are for building it.
  • Joinery, ceilings, lighting and finishes each need their own drawings, not just a picture.
  • Supervision during installation is what protects the approved design from substitutions.

An interior design project produces more than beautiful images. The images help you decide; the drawings and specifications are what make the finished room match the decision.

The brief

Each room is described by its use: who sleeps in this bedroom, how the kitchen is used day to day, how much storage the dressing room needs, how the majlis receives guests. Then the direction: modern, classic, or a considered blend, with references you like and the reasons you like them.

Concept: layout, light and materials

The concept sets the furniture layout, the lighting idea and a material direction, presented with visualisations. This is the stage for big decisions: where the bed and wardrobes go, how light enters, what the room feels like at night.

Detailed design: the drawings that build the room

Once the concept is approved, the design is drawn in detail:

  • Layouts with dimensions, furniture and circulation.
  • Ceiling plans with heights, coves and the position of every light.
  • Joinery drawings for wardrobes, kitchens, vanities and panelling.
  • Elevations of key walls with finishes, sockets and switches.
  • A finishes schedule naming each material, colour and supplier code.

These are what a contractor prices and builds from. Without them, decisions are taken on site, and each one moves the result away from what you approved.

Installation and checks

During installation the designer’s role is to check that what is fitted matches the drawings and the approved samples. Most disappointments in finished interiors come from substitutions made quietly on site; supervision is how they are caught.

Nation’s interior work

Our interior design projects range from complete residences, such as a private residence in Abu Dhabi with bedroom, bathroom, dressing room, kitchen and laundry designs, to cafés such as De Roma Cafe on Yas Island. Start a project to discuss yours.

Questions

Are visualisations enough for a contractor?

No. A visualisation shows the intent; the contractor needs dimensioned drawings, materials and details to price and build it.

Can I see real samples of the materials?

You should. Colours and textures on screen differ from the real thing, so final choices are best made with samples in the room's light.
